As a result, products made from durum wheat have gained popularity with the growing area of durum wheat showing a slow but steady increase.  WHY GROW ISTERRA WINTER DURUM WHEAT VARIETIES? 

Robust varieties: in the case of durum wheat, lodging resistance is of paramount importance. Without exception, Isterra’s winter durum varieties have excellent lodging resistance, so there is no need to worry about that!

High disease tolerance: Toscadou is a top variety with outstanding resistance to rust diseases. Providing for healthy ears is essential when growing durum wheat. To be able to maintain premium quality, proper cultivation practices are even more important than in the case of winter wheat.

Winter-hardy varieties: our aim is to breed winter hardy and resistant varieties. Isterra durum wheat varieties reach a suitable developmental stage by the time winter arrives, even when autumn weather is not optimal for sowing. In the spring, plants readily start to grow, with excellent tillering.

Variety testing in Hungary: the best breeding practice is to test new wheat varieties under the climatic and soil conditions were they will be actually grown. We breed new varieties from year to ear which are then tested at our breeding station in Füzesabony, Hungary as well as at other experimental sites.

Outstanding quality: durum flour is popular for making pasta because it gives a beautiful, yellow dough even without adding eggs. All our varieties are characterized by a high yellow pigment content, excellent glassiness.

Having recognized the growing demand for durum wheat, we have set ourselves the objective of breeding high-yielding varieties and producing premium quality seeds to increase the growing area of durum wheat in Hungary. Since there is a growing demand for healthy food, the milling industry specifically requires premium raw materials.
